Media literacy is an essential skill for all. The average American is subjected to over 4,000 media messages each day! “Critical media literacy is an educational response that expands the notion of literacy to include different forms of mass communication, popular culture, and new technologies. It deepens the potential of literacy education to critically analyze relationships between media and audiences, information, and power, (Kellner & Share, 2007, p. 2).” The problem is that only 20 states actually have legislation in place that requires digital/media education in K-12. In this session we will break down digital/media literacy laws impacting K-12 education by state. Included in this discussion will be a review of resources available to help support digital/media literacy and access to the only comprehensive tracker of digital/media legislative activity in K-12 education in the US.
